Lovingly remembered as a man of great inspiration, Sven Tumba’s dream to unite the world through sport. Sven is not only remembered for being a golf pioneer.

 

As a highly honoured three-sports star in Sweden, he played a pivotal role as an ambassador for ice hockey and football in his early sporting career. In 1999 Sven was awarded the “Best Swedish Ice-hockey Player of All Times” and was inducted into the IIHF Hall of Fame in 1997. Today he still holds the Swedish scoring record of 186 goals  (in 245 games) for the Swedish national team. In the mid-50’s Sven also represented the Swedish national football team and was a Swedish  champion in water skiing. His passion pioneered the path for golf in Sweden, the former Soviet Union and gave rise to tournaments such as the Colgate Cup, the largest golf tournament for children. In 1970 he became the Founder and President of the European Open in the European Tour, a position that he held for 15 years. He also founded the Scandinavian Enterprise Open, now the Nordea Masters. On the 100th anniversary of the Swedish Golf Federation in 2004, Sven was named the most influential person in the history of golf in that country.

 

As a man of great vision, Sven was driven to promote golf on a global scale. It was his dream to give amateur golfers the opportunity to experience the same thrill of representing your country as a professional golfer in an international tournament. This dream was realised in 1995 when he founded the World Golfers Championship. From humble beginnings, Sven dedicated 17 years to developing this tournament into what is today the world’s premier amateur golf event. Sven our friend, mentor, hero, and champion.
